3D Printer Starter Guide ⑤ How to Choose the Right 3D Printer for Your Business

Posted by FIT THAI on

Throughout the episodes, we have explained the basics and technologies of 3D printing in various dimensions.

  • Chapter 1: Basics of 3D Printing
  • Chapter 2: Examples of applications in industry and medicine
  • Part 3: Comparing Low-Cost FDM vs. High-Resolution SLA
  • Chapter 4: Industrial-grade technologies such as SLS for high-strength applications

As you may have seen, there are many different types of 3D printers, each with its own unique strengths and limitations. In this final section, we'll outline exactly which model best meets your business needs.

What kind of challenges is your company facing?

Generally, experts considering using a 3D printer often have two main challenges:

Problem A: Requires “high resolution + high speed”

For design work, customer display models, or prototype experiments that require high surface resolution.
We want “beautiful, smooth work” and “fastest printing”.

Problem B: Requires “high strength + high durability”

To produce small quantities of functional parts, spare parts, fixtures, jigs, or product components.
We need materials that are durable, heat-resistant, and can be used in factories.

The choice of machine changes completely depending on which problem you want to solve.

■ Solution to Problem A: We need a “high-resolution prototype” that can be “made as quickly as possible.”

The answer is, it is suitable for SLA (resin) printers.

  • Quickly view the actual workpiece from a 3D model.
  • Create a model to present to clients
  • Dental clinics/labs that require highly accurate and immediate work models.

Why SLA?

FDM
Cheap, even with low cost, but has a lot of printing marks and is not suitable for experimental work or high-resolution designs.

SLA
Using light to harden resin, it produces a smooth surface that is close to that of plastic injection molding, with very high precision.

Recommended Devices: Formlabs Form 4 / Form 4B

Formlabs has long dominated the professional SLA market, and the latest Form 4 increases speeds to 100 mm/h, making it one of the fastest SLA printers on the market.

The difference from amateur machines (Elegoo, Anycubic, etc.) is stability, longevity, professional software and a variety of materials to use.

Materials range from ABS-like, PC-like, Silicone-like to biocompatible medical resins used with the Form 4B. Formlabs' resin + software + printer system is designed to be a reliable “ecosystem” for professional applications.

■ Solution to Problem B: Need to produce “real parts/heavy-duty parts” in-house.

The answer is, it is suitable for SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) systems.

  • Produce fixtures/jigs for production lines
  • Produce small quantities of parts without mold making
  • Need materials that are durable, heat-resistant, and much stronger than SLA/FDM.

Why SLS?

FDM has problems with strength and printing direction.
SLA/Resin is often not heat resistant and degrades when exposed to UV.
But SLS uses high-quality nylon powder , providing excellent strength, durability, and heat resistance.
Most importantly, there is no support , so complex shapes can be printed freely.

Recommended Device: Formlabs Fuse 1+ 30W

Previously, SLS was available only in large, multi-million baht machines. The Fuse 1+ 30W makes SLS more accessible with compact machines priced in the "hundreds of thousands to millions of baht" range.

Key Features: Very cost-effective for factories that require in-house production.

  • 30W laser is very fast.
  • Up to 70% powder reuse reduces cost per piece.
  • Get durable nylon parts ready for use in the production line.

[Summary] How to choose the machine that best suits your needs

3D printers are not magic bullets, but rather “problem-solving tools” that must be chosen to meet specific needs.

Your problem The right way to type Recommended models
High-resolution prototypes and fast printing required SLA Form 4 / Form 4B
Want to produce real, strong and durable pieces SLS Fuse 1+ 30W

Formlabs offers more than just physical devices. It also offers user-friendly software, industry-grade materials, and comprehensive support, making it ideal for organizations seeking professional results.
