Kusatsu Kokusai Ski Resort Remotely Measures Temperature on Ski Slopes with a Data Logger

Kusatsu Kokusai Ski Resort is a ski resort with a large skiing area, covering multiple elevations. This results in significant differences in temperature, snow quantity, and slope conditions across various areas.

Therefore, the resort needed a system that could quickly and safely monitor and record temperatures on the ski slopes without requiring staff to manually inspect every point.

Problems with the Previous Temperature Monitoring Method

Before installing the system, staff had to travel to various points on the ski slopes to read thermometers, which was time-consuming and potentially dangerous, especially during bad weather or heavy snowfall.

Additionally, the resort regularly received phone calls from tourists, hotels, and local tour operators inquiring about temperatures and slope conditions. Answering inquiries this way was not only time-consuming but also risked inaccurate information due to communication errors.

The resort therefore sought a temperature and humidity monitoring system that could collect data from multiple points and reliably transmit it for remote monitoring.

RTR-500 Series System Installation

The resort installed an RTR-503 temperature and humidity data logger along with two RTR-500MBS-A Base Units.

The first unit was installed at the highest point of the ski slope, approximately 2,000 meters above sea level, and the other was installed at the lowest point, approximately 1,250 meters above sea level.

The RTR-503 measures and records temperature and humidity data, while the Base Units receive data from the loggers wirelessly at set intervals.

The Base Units, equipped with SIM cards, then transmit the data via a 3G mobile network, allowing staff to monitor the information from computers or mobile devices without having to physically inspect the equipment.

Note: The RTR-500 Series has been discontinued and has been developed into the RTR500B Series, which is the current model with improved performance and communication capabilities.

Results of Remote Temperature Monitoring on the Ski Slopes

After the system installation, the resort can quickly and safely monitor and record temperatures from various elevations on the ski slopes. The collected data is continuous and reduces the risk of errors from manual recording or communication.

Temperature and weather data can also be published on the resort's website and shared with hotels, tour companies, skiers, and snowboarders to help everyone plan their trips and prepare appropriate gear for the actual conditions.

This system is not only beneficial in winter. During the summer, the resort can display cool temperature data to attract tourists, while hikers can check near real-time weather conditions and choose appropriate clothing before their trips.

Using a remote data logger system for temperature and humidity monitoring thus reduces staff workload, increases safety, and allows the resort to provide faster and more accurate weather information to its guests.
