Power Construction Uses WiFi-Based Temperature and Humidity Monitoring System to Enhance Construction Quality Control

Posted by FIT THAI on

In the construction of large buildings, especially hospitals or high-standard buildings, temperature and humidity control is a crucial factor that cannot be overlooked. Inappropriate environmental conditions can directly affect the quality of materials and installation work.

Power Construction, a leading contractor in Chicago, therefore adopted T&D's WiFi temperature and humidity data logging system to automatically monitor the building's internal environment and share data with its team and subcontractors from anywhere.

Project Challenges

In a 27-story hospital construction project, the team needed to continuously monitor the internal environment, especially during winter when temporary heating systems were in use.

Many construction materials have strict temperature and humidity requirements, such as:

  • Doors may warp if humidity is too high.
  • Carpet adhesive may not perform optimally if the temperature is too low.
  • Interior woodworking may be damaged by inappropriate environmental conditions.

Therefore, the team had to regularly monitor temperature and humidity data on each floor to meet the project's quality standards.

Problems with the Old System

Previously, Power Construction used USB data loggers installed on each floor of the building.

The work involved manually collecting data, downloading it from the devices, and then compiling it into a spreadsheet for reporting.

While this method could collect data, it required a significant amount of time and labor and could not provide real-time monitoring.

Switching to WiFi Monitoring System

Since the project already had a WiFi network for the team, Power Construction chose to install 12 T&D TR-72wf temperature and humidity data loggers throughout the building.

The system was set up to measure temperature and humidity every 30 minutes and automatically transmit data via the WiFi network.

A key advantage is that even if the WiFi signal is temporarily lost or there is a power outage, the device continues to record data and immediately transmits it back to the system once the connection is restored, ensuring no critical data is lost during operation.

Alerts for Abnormalities

The system can send instant email alerts when measured values, whether temperature or humidity, exceed the defined range.

It also features a "Back to Normal Alarm," which notifies when environmental conditions return to normal, allowing supervisors to monitor the situation from their smartphones and reducing the need for on-site inspections.

Cloud Data Storage and Accessibility for All Parties

All data from the data loggers is automatically uploaded to T&D's WebStorage Service.

Users can view historical data via a web browser or iOS and Android applications from anywhere with internet access.

Power Construction can also share user IDs and passwords with subcontractors to access the same data, ensuring all parties reference information from a single source. This reduces communication discrepancies and enhances the efficiency of quality control.

Long-term Cost Reduction

Previously, the company used a system that transmitted data via mobile networks, which incurred ongoing monthly costs even during periods without active projects.

Switching to T&D's WiFi system allowed them to utilize existing infrastructure, reduce data communication costs, and reuse the equipment in subsequent projects.

Results Achieved

After installing T&D's WiFi environmental monitoring system, Power Construction can:

✅ Automatically monitor temperature and humidity.
✅ Reduce time spent on data collection and compilation.
✅ Receive immediate alerts for abnormalities.
✅ Easily share data with subcontractors.
✅ View historical data via the Cloud from anywhere.
✅ Reduce costs compared to systems with monthly fees.

Summary

Power Construction's case study demonstrates that a WiFi temperature and humidity monitoring system can effectively enhance construction quality control. This includes real-time data tracking, automatic alerts, cloud data storage, and convenient data sharing for all relevant parties.

For factories, warehouses, office buildings, environmentally controlled rooms, or construction projects that require continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity, and environmental data, T&D's Data Logger system and data management solutions offer a reliable option to enhance management efficiency and quality control with confidence.
